At Douglas Anderson School of the Arts, guitar is more than an instrument. It’s a way to find your voice, listen closely, and create something meaningful together.
Established in 1994 by Don Casper, the guitar program continues to be one of the best in the state of Florida. Our program brings dedicated young musicians into a creative community centered on musical growth, individual expression, and the joy of performance.
This year, the guitar department will hold its 33rd annual Great Guitar Gathering, which will feature Dr. Stephen Robinson. Stephen Robinson was commended by The New York Times for his “effortless virtuosity with intelligence and good taste” and by (Puerto Rico’s) El Nuevo Dia as a “magnificent North American guitarist, full of virtuosity, magnificent technical precision, and a masterfully delivered diverse range of sound.” Early in his career, Stephen worked closely with the great Andrés Segovia, who called him “a magnificent guitarist, one of the most brilliant guitarists of our times.”
Students at Douglas Anderson are serious about music fundamentals. We spend a great deal of time in class developing our technique and building our musical knowledge.
Learning to listen, collaborate, and make music together. An important element of our program at D.A. is our love for ensemble music, and the guitar department has many performances throughout the year, both at school and around the community.
As a music student at Douglas Anderson, you will have the opportunity to study recording arts, music production, songwriting, piano, and of course, music history and theory.
Students must prepare two pieces of music. One piece will be from the classical guitar repertoire, and the other is the player's choice. Students should also be prepared to sight-read a short excerpt. You may use the examples from music download link.
Prospective students must also perform the C major Segovia scale, and they should do so with alternating i and m rest-strokes. These scales are included in the music download.
Requests for recommendation letters are made only through SlideRoom, and two recommendations are required. A copy of the student’s most recent report card must also be submitted with at least a 2.0 GPA. The audition process will include an interview, and the audition location will be the guitar room, which is building 10, room 159.
